The final stage is set in Chamonix as the top eight semi-finalists from the men’s and women’s Lead competition are confirmed with home interest in both.
In the men’s Lead, Sam Avezou progressed in seventh position reaching hold 39+, a mark with a host of climbers fell. Eighth placed Luca Potocar of Slovenia also made the hold to sneak into the final.
The form climbers in 2023 seem to be Japan’s Anraku Sorato and Great Britain’s Toby Roberts, and the two young guns once again showed it advancing in joint first reaching hold 50+.
Just behind was USA’s Colin Duffy who reached hold 46+ and said: “It was really fun. The route was tough and quite powerful. I had a good fight and it was good.
“I’ve always been better in Lead than Boulder but the last two weeks I have felt like I’m getting my groove in time for the World Champs. The goal for the year was to peak at the right time and I think that is working out as every competition my shape is getting better.”
The other three climbers to make the finals were Germany’s Alexander Megos, South Korea’s Lee Dohyun and Austria’s Stefan Scherz.
For the women, the French flag will be carried by Hélène Janicot who made finals in sixth position reaching hold 36.
The top climber in semi-finals was Seo Chaehyun of South Korea who reached hold 46+, two holds higher than second placed Jessica Pilz of Austria.
The women’s final will see three pairs of teammates with South Korea’s Kim Jain joining Seo, Japan’s Nonaka Miho and Kume Nonoha, and Slovenia’s Mia Krampl and Vita Lukan all making it through.
The final is scheduled to start at 20:30 (UTC+2:00) this evening with the women’s final up first before the men close the IFSC World Cup in Chamonix.
