Qualifications at the final International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Lead World Cup 2022 got underway in Jakarta, Indonesia as Janja Garnbret continued her stellar form and the Japanese men showed their strength.
All year Olympic champion, Slovenia’s Garnbret has been the one to beat with four gold’s and two silver medals for the season. The only climber to have beaten her is Mori Ai, but with the Japanese climber’s absence it was Seo Chaehyun of South Korea to lead the charge.
Both women topped both routes and sit in the top two qualification spots. Slovenian teammate Vita Lukanalso topped route 1 to sit third behind the frontrunners.
Germany’s Hannah Meul is in fourth position thanks to her first ever World Cup top. A strong showing on her second route put her in a good qualification position and will give her confidence to push for a podium place.
Home hope rests on the shoulders of Widid Fujiyanti who was the only Indonesian women to make the top 26 for a place in the semifinals.

While the women’s Lead has been dominated by one athlete, the men’s is dominated by a nation – Japan.
Six of the top ten qualifiers are from Japan including Yoshida Satone and Ogata Yoshiyuki who both topped both routes to sit in joint first position.
Sascha Lehmann of Switzerland is the top non-Japanese climber sitting in third overall after topping route 1, one of eight climbers to do so.
Route 2 was a little tougher for the climbers with only the top two and Germany’s Sebastian Halenke reaching the summit. Halenke qualified in sixth position.
There is a little more for the home crowd to cheer in men’s Lead with four Indonesian athletes making the semifinals including the Ramadhan brothers – Ravianto and Raviandi.
