A total of 18 countries and territories competed at the opening event of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Paraclimbing World Cup Series 2023, which concluded yesterday, 17 May, at The Front Climbing Club in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.
Nine of these countries ended up with a gold medal, and 13 of them won at least one medal.
The bronze secured by Ignacio Martinez in the men’s RP3 event, however, had an added value: Martinez, indeed, is the first athlete who represented Chile at an IFSC Paraclimbing event – ever.
“I have been preparing for this moment for the past three years,” said the 24-year-old from Curico, Chile. “I am very happy and excited, it is a very big moment for me. Hopefully, my presence here will inspire other people to participate in future Paraclimbing competitions. I am very proud of being part of this community.
“The majority of the gyms in Chile, outside of the capital Santiago, are Boulder gyms, so training for a Paraclimbing event is not easy. My wish is that the governing bodies will push for a change, and that more climbers and paraclimbers will participate in future IFSC competitions.”
The IFSC Paraclimbing World Cup Series 2023 will continue in June, with events in Innsbruck, Austria, and Villars, Switzerland, while the most anticipated one of this season – the IFSC Paraclimbing World Championships – is scheduled to take place from 8 to 10 August in Bern, Switzerland.
News and updates about the event will be available on the IFSC website and on the Federation’s digital channels: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and exclusively for the Chinese audience, Weibo and Douyin.
