Janja Garnbret, one of the greatest competition climbers of all time, broke her left big toe during a training session in February. While an injured toe may not sound like a big deal compared to a knee, shoulder, or finger injury, in climbing we are almost always driving our weight through our big toes. Garnbret was unable to wear a climbing shoe on her left foot for weeks, hampering her training for upcoming IFSC World Cup events.
“My comeback to the competition circuit will have to wait a bit, as I’ve decided to skip the bouldering comps in both Asia and the US to give my toe some more time to recover,” she said via Instagram and Facebook. “I’m not that good in holding myself back in comp mode so I figured being patient a bit longer might be a smart move.”
With this announcement, Garnbret will miss at least the first three Boulder World Cups. First, she’ll be absent from next weeks’ Boulder World Cup in Hachioji, Japan from April 21 to 23. Then she’ll miss Boulder World Cups in Seoul, South Korea from April 28 to 30 and Salt Lake City, Utah from May 19 to 21.

Garnbret’s résumé in international competition climbing is unmatched. She won gold at the Tokyo Olympics. She also won gold at 23 Lead World Cups and 14 Boulder World Cups. Overall, she won the Lead World Cup season every year from 2016 to 2022, except in 2019 when she won silver. She won the overall Boulder World Cup season in 2019 and she won Combined four years in a row, from 2016 to 2019.
