The state has 56.7 million registered voters.The state election commissioner (SEC) made the announcement on Friday, hours after the final day for filing nominations saw four fatalities and sporadic violence in North Dinajpur and South 24 Parganas district. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has fielded 85,817 candidates, the number of nominations, for the July 8 three-tier panchayat polls in Bengal’s 20 districts and two-tier polls in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts.
According to SEC, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] came in second with 48,648 candidates, followed by the Congress with 17,750 nominees, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with 56,321 nominations.The Aam Aadmi Party, which is hardly present in Bengal, has submitted 13 nominations, and the SEC said that there are 16293 independent candidates.In panchayat regions, there are 61,636 polling places for the 63,229 gramme panchayat seats, 9,730 panchayat samiti seats, and 928 zilla parishad seats, according to the SEC’s data. The TMC was declared the undisputed winner at about 20 panchayat samitis in the Hooghly, East Burdwan, and Bankura districts amid allegations that many opposition candidates were unable to file nomination papers in the wake of the widespread violence, even after the Calcutta high court on Thursday ordered the police to accompany some of these people to the nomination centres.”West Bengal has never seen this kind of free and fair nomination filing. But what if the opposition is unable to field any candidates? We are unable to find candidates for them, according to TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh.
