The 2023 IFSC Climbing Youth World Championships got underway in Seoul, South Korea, as the men’s and women’s Under 18 Lead and men’s Under 16 Lead competitions got underway at Seoul Mountain Climbing & Culture Center.

WHAT THEY SAID:
Yong Kang Dylan Seow (SGP) – men’s Under 16
“I don’t think I really climbed that good today. The first route my hands felt kind of cold. I did get a good warm up, but I think I maybe rested too long between my warm-up and climb, and I slipped on the route. The second, I’m still not really sure how I fell. I felt the pump a little bit. When I started the warm-up there was only about five climbers before me, so it was a bit of fresh pump.
“My goal was to make semis, but I’m not sure now after those climbs. I’m still looking forward to Boulder even if I don’t make it and the event has been fun so far.”
Vail Everett (USA) – men’s Under 18
“It was really great. The routes felt super smooth, and they were really well set. It’s a little bit hot here, but what can you do about that. Ideally I want to make finals in both Boulder and Lead, but I’m just really excited to be out here, have some fun and take part in this great competition.”
Noe Looser (SUI) – women’s Under 18
“I liked the second route a lot. The first not so much, but it was ok. I was in Dallas and Voronezh for the Youth Worlds, but it’s my first time in South Korea so I just want to have fun and enjoy this event.”
