WHAT THEY SAID:
Qualification
Valentina Arnoldi (ITA) – women’s Under 20
“The first climb I was a bit anxious but on the second I felt good and climbed quite well. It’s my first Youth Worlds and my goal is definitely to make finals.”
Fahim Khandel (AUS) – men’s Under 20
“It could have gone better for me today I think. On the first route I faffed around a bit on the fourth draw and fell pretty randomly. I definitely didn’t give it as much as I could have. I was pretty happy with route two. Got a shot at semis but I did miss a clip near the top and I couldn’t go any further, I probably could have gone one or two moves higher.
“It’s my first and last Youth Worlds as I age out this year. Coming into this I would have been happy with top 40 in Lead, semis would have been good but considering the rest of the field I would have had to have had a really good performance for that to happen. I’m doing Boulder as well so again top 40, but now I’m going to try and channel all my frustration from Lead into that event and hopefully make semis and then give a good shot at finals.”
Sara Coper (SLO) – women’s Under 20
“It was really hot today so it was hard to climb and hard to relax. I was struggling a little on the wall, but it’s amazing to be here and compete in the Youth World Championships.
“I competed in Bern at the World Championships last week, but only in Lead. Both events are stressful, I can’t decide which is more. The senior routes are harder but here is more fun. I’m just really happy that I am here.”
Semi-final
Flora Oblasser (AUT) – women’s Under 16
“The semi-final route was awesome. I’m not happy that my foot slipped in the upper part, I would have loved to have tried the jump. I didn’t have much pump it was just really annoying that my foot slipped. I’m hoping for another cool finals route.
“I’ve trained a lot for Lead for this competition, and I will be really unhappy if I won’t get a medal. I’m super happy I am here now and I really enjoyed climbing tonight.”
